Garage door off track repair in Toronto

A door that hangs crooked or jams on one side is under strain. Stop using it and read what repair involves.

  • Bent or jumped tracks
  • Frayed and snapped cables
  • Rollers and brackets checked

Step 1 of 3

What do you need?

What does off-track garage door repair involve?

A door is off track when one or more rollers jump out of the vertical or horizontal track. The door then sits crooked, binds or will not move. Repair means making the door safe, then putting it right.

A technician secures the door and releases its load, resets or replaces the track, replaces damaged rollers and hinges, and checks the cables and springs. The door is then tested for balance and smooth travel in both directions.

The door cannot simply be forced back into place. It can fall or twist, damage the panels and injure anyone nearby. The cables are part of the spring system and carry the weight of the door, so they must be handled carefully.

Why does a garage door come off its track?

Several things can push a door out of its track:

  • A car bumping the door or the track edge.
  • A snapped cable on one side, which lets that corner drop.
  • A broken or worn roller that slips out.
  • A bent track after an impact, or loose brackets and bolts from years of vibration.
  • Ice, packed slush or debris in the track.

Winter adds its own causes. Ice can freeze the bottom corner of the door to the floor, and the opener then pulls one side harder than the other. Salt and moisture rust the cable ends and brackets, which weakens them over time.

Is a snapped garage door cable dangerous?

Yes. The lift cables carry much of the weight of the door and are tied to the same system as the springs. When one snaps, one side of the door can drop suddenly and the other side can twist in the track.

Frayed strands, rust at the bottom bracket and a cable that looks slack are warning signs. Do not touch the bottom brackets, which are under heavy load, and do not try to rethread a cable or work on the spring. Both jobs are for trained technicians.

It is also worth knowing that a broken cable often comes with other damage, such as a bent track or a cracked panel. Having the whole door inspected prevents a second failure.

The quote depends on what is damaged, not only on the track. Details that change it include:

  • How many rollers, hinges or cables are worn or broken.
  • Whether the track can be straightened or must be replaced.
  • Whether the door sections are bent or cracked. See panel replacement if they are.
  • Whether the springs are also worn. See spring repair for more.

Simple roller and track resets can take an hour or so. Jobs with bent panels or several parts can take longer. Ask for a written quote that lists the parts so you know what is being replaced and why.

What should I do while I wait, and when do I call?

If the door is crooked or a cable has snapped, stop using it. Do not press the opener button, since the motor can tear the door further out of the track. Do not push or lift it by hand.

Keep children and pets away, and keep cars out from under it. If the door is partly open, do not walk or park beneath it. Clear snow and ice from your side of the door if it is safe to do so, but do not reach into the track.

Call when you see a door that hangs crooked, a gap along one side, a cable hanging loose, grinding or jerking when it moves. Return to our home page for an overview of the repair services we cover.

Questions about garage doors in Toronto

Can I push my garage door back onto the track myself?

It is not a good idea. A door that is off track may be carrying uneven load, and the cables and springs are still under tension. Forcing it can drop the door, bend the panels and injure you. Stop using it, keep people clear and book a technician who can secure the door first.

What does a snapped garage door cable look like?

One side of the door usually hangs lower than the other, and the cable may be loose or hanging near the bottom corner. Frayed strands near the drum or bracket are an early warning. If you see any of these, do not touch the cable or the bracket. Stay clear and call for repair.

Why does my garage door get stuck on one side?

Common causes include a worn roller, a bent track, a loose bracket, a cable that has stretched or frayed, or ice at one bottom corner. The cause can be simple or serious, so do not keep running the opener. A technician can find the real cause and fix it before the door gets worse.

Can a bent garage door track be straightened?

Small bends can sometimes be straightened. A creased or badly twisted track is usually replaced, because a weakened track can fail again. The technician checks the whole run of track, the brackets and the rollers. Ask which parts were repaired and which were replaced.

Will home insurance cover an off-track garage door?

It depends on your policy and the cause of the damage. Wear and tear is often excluded, while damage from an accident or a storm may be covered. Check your policy or ask your insurer before the repair, and keep the written quote and any photos of the damage.
